紫外線による除菌は、医療、食品分野や理髪店などで古くから利用されてきました。 紫外線UV-C（波長254nm）は、菌やウィルスの細胞が持っているDNAやRNAに吸収される性質を持っており、DNA組織のらせん構造を破壊します。破壊されたDNA組織は、繁殖能力を失い死滅します。 これが、紫外線UV-Cによる菌やウィルスの不活化の仕組みです。

UV sterilization has long been used in the medical and food industries, as well as in barbershops. Ultraviolet light UV-C (254 nm wavelength) is absorbed by the DNA and RNA of bacteria and viral cells, destroying the helical structure of the DNA tissue. The destroyed DNA tissue loses its ability to reproduce and dies. This is how ultraviolet UV-C inactivates bacteria and viruses.
